Belgrade Chess

Chess in the City of Belgrade

Belgrade chess runs through its clubs and through the city federation's hall on Deligradska, where its blitz Grand Prix “Čugeri u šobu” is played. Clubs sit closest together in Zemun, Novi Beograd and Zvezdara; Red Star on Ustanička and Radnički on Gospodara Vučića run tournament series of their own; memorials and opens fill the calendar, and club chess schools take children from pre-school age. Lazarevac, Mladenovac and Obrenovac keep their own clubs and summer tournaments.

Chess960 in Belgrade

No Chess960 game over a real board turned up in the City of Belgrade. The tournament listings for Serbia on the chess-results server and the FIDE-rated events of the Belgrade area were searched for Chess960, Fischer random, Freestyle and Fišerov šah: the one Serbian rapid under that name was played in Subotica, outside the city, and the tournaments carrying the name of Bobi Fišer honour the player and are played at ordinary rules.

In Chess960 the pieces on the back rank start from one of 960 shuffled positions, so prepared openings count for little and both players think for themselves from the first move. Until a Belgrade club puts it on its programme, it can be played online at ch960.com.

No over-the-board Chess960 event has been found in Belgrade so far.

How a listing reads

Each listing is built from pages anyone can open: the FIDE list of rated tournaments for Serbia, the chess-results tournament server with its organiser and venue lines, a business directory of Belgrade clubs, press reports and the websites of the clubs that keep one, last read on . A listing shows the date of its newest trace and quotes the line that carries it.

Lists are ordered by the date of their newest evidence, never by any judgement of a club or an event. A field that no page fills reads "not stated by sources". The status lines, the three source marks and the limits of the guide are explained under sources and method.

A club missing or a listing out of date?

Belgrade clubs change halls, and chess schools change their timetables from one season to the next. If a listing lags behind, or a club, school or tournament is missing, send a short note with a link to the page that shows it.
